Session 5: Authoring/Media Development/Presentation

1. You have been asked to create a podcast. Which of the above tools (or name another) would you use? Briefly explain the procedure you would use to create the podcast.

Tool used – Audacity for Windows

Steps to make a Podcast: download Audacity for Windows, buy a microphone, choose my topic and make an outline, find a quiet place to record in order to improve sound quality and begin recording bearing in mind that I should keep my levels as close to 0 as possible, and edit the podcast.

2. You have been asked to help create a presentation that demonstrates how to resize a photograph using Adobe Photoshop. Which of the above tools (or name another) would you use? How would you go about creating the presentation?

Tool used – Camtasia Relay

Steps to make a presentation: launch Camtasia relay, log in using my username and password, select the Screencast by Presenter profile, click Audio Device in order to choose the appropriate audio device, enter my presentation title and description, write a script and outline, click record to record the presentation, right click to stop recording, click trimming to edit the recording, and then click Submit to load on to the internet.

3. What are tools like Articulate and Captivate for? What features do they offer that would be hard to replicate with less expensive tools?

Articulate Studio and Adobe Captivate can be used to create learning scenarios in an online setting. The instruction developed through these programs is generally asynchronous. The output is often an audio file with closed captioned text.

Articulate and Captivate offer the ability to connect with learning management software as well as the internet, build quizzes, have flash-based output, can be used to produce moderately complex learning interactions and allow for branching, they allow for varying color schemes and offer flexibility in the final look of the product. These programs can be used by programmers to enhance asynchronous learning far more easily than would be possible through free software. Both programs offer quiz interaction, engage activities, flash movies, animation development, annotation, and customized flash games. Both offer technical support, smaller file sizes for better streaming, complete packages which makes design easier.

4. Create a presentation! Your presentation must include the following:

4a) You must create a text transcript. The text transcript is a .doc or .txt file that is just the transcript of the audio presented and/or the text that is visible to the user of the presentation.

David Shenk used the phrase Data Smog to describe the over-abundance of information coming at us from many different directions that must be evaluated for usefulness.

Having so much  information available can cause anxiety as people struggle to make decisions without knowing if they have what they need to make the best decision.

• IL provides the skillset to choose and find information.
• IL enables us to analyze information, giving us confidence in the work we do or decisions we make based on that information.

4b) Your presentation needs to be in a media format other than just text. So while you must create a text file, you must then use that text file to create a more advanced version of the presentation.

I decided to use Power Point.  I knew that I wasn’t going to use screen shots so Camtasia wasn’t the best choice. I had information I wanted to convey that could be presented in a limited space. I wanted a small file size that could be easily and quickly downloaded.

4c) Your presentation needs to be (choose appropriate standard based on the type of media) at least 5 slides long if a Slide-Based presentation, 5 minutes if a podcast or video or other type of multimedia format.

You may either upload your presentation to your blog or other site and provide a URL in your blog post for the week, or you may provide the presentation to the instructor in another appropriate manner (CD, DVD, etc.). If you provide the presentation in a way that isn’t linkable, just explain this under number 4 in your blog post this week.

5. Explain your presentation development method, procedures and technology. This is to be posted on your blog. Cover the following:

5a) What did you do to prepare to develop the presentation?

I thought about what I wanted to talk about, made a brief outline, decided to use PPT, created the transcript, put the information onto slides, and then edited the slides.

5b) Did you create the transcript first? Why or why not?

It was sort of simultaneous. I worked on the PPT, then I moved to the transcript. Then I made corrections in both.

5c) Explain your development process.

I tried to develop a PPT that would explain to college students why they should care about learning Information Literacy skills. I used Power Point because it is a small file size and many of my students are very used to working with PPT. Many students feel that Google fulfills their information needs so I used Google Scholar as an example. Also, I intended to post this to the internet and I didn’t want to break copyright by using a subscription database. I wanted to include an audio file as well. I did not particularly want to do an overlay over the PPT as the voice sometimes runs faster than the presentation.

5d) Explain how you addressed (or would address) ADA considerations in your presentation.

I would create an audio file to go with the PPT.

5e)What did you learn about creating presentations?

I learned that I needed to make the slides simpler. I tend to use too many words. Also, just doing one concept per page makes the instruction more clear. I tend to want to try and get as much as I can on one page. I tried to use the instructions in the Death by Power Point presentation. I found it helpful. Remembering to plan what I wanted to do and what media would be best to suit the purpose was helpful to me.
